Order Supping

Order Supping (short for Order Supplementing, predominantly used in telecommunications) is the process of updating an order that is already in progress during service delivery.

These updates typically occur after the order has been submitted but before fulfillment is complete, and reflect changes required to successfully deliver the service.

Examples

  • Updating technical details (e.g., DMARC information)
  • Adding products or components (e.g., IP address block, wireless backup)
  • Modifying order details due to construction or serviceability requirements
  • Adjusting delivery parameters based on vendor or network constraints

Implementation

In order management systems, order supping is typically handled in one of two ways:

  1. Supplemental Order Model. A new supplemental order is created and linked to the original order, capturing incremental changes separately.
  2. In-Place Update Model. The existing order is updated directly, with changes tracked through versioning or audit history. This approach is used by Nextian Order Management, enabling a single continuous order record with full traceability.
